Choice of the right breeder - Who is the right breeder?

Everybody, who is interested in a Rhodesian Ridgeback, asks the question: „Where do I get my puppy"? Because the offer of RR-puppies is growing, we would like to explain on what essential puppy interested people should pay attention. Nearly all Rhodesian Ridgebacks will be offered with Pedigrees. But these paper are not equal.

Breeder in Germany, who are breeding in the German Kennel Club VDH (Verband für das deutsche Hundewesen), subject to the statutes of the F.C.I. and VDH and give their puppies with worldwide accepted papers to their new owner.

In Germany we have 3 VDH registered RR Club. The Club E.L.S.A. (Club zur Erhaltung der Laufhunde des südlichen Afrika), the Club where we are members, is one of this three Clubs.

Dogs with VDH/F.C.I.-Pedigrees are allowed to be shown at national and international Shows, organised by the F.C.I. and VDH. If they are registered for breeding, they have passed a breeding examination with temperament test and gun shot.

In Germany we also have breeders who are not breeding after the rules of the VDH and F.C.I. The puppies from this breeders get also paper/pedigrees, but this pedigrees are not international accepted.

Puppies from breeders, who do not breed after the VDH/F.C.I. Standard, are sometimes cheaper. The parents of the litters did not make a breeding examination, a temperament test and all the health tests like HD, OCD and ED. A lot of this "breeders" have more than one breed for breeding and several litters at the same time for sale. This is not allowed in our Club E.L.S.A.. It is only allowed to have 2 bitches for breeding at the same time, only one litter at the same time, the period of time between the litters (of one bitch) has to be more than 18 month and so on. We have very strong rules for breeding and we do not have people in our Club who "produce" puppies.

Please check exactly what papers/Pedigrees your Rhodesian Ridgeback will get. Ask the breeder in which Club he breeds and take a look at the papers/Pedigrees and the health tests of the parents. If you are buying a puppy from a german breeder, pay attention that the puppies will get VDH pedigrees. It is an F.C.I. rule that the puppies have to get the Pedigrees of the Kennel Club in the country, where they are born! And in Germany this is the VDH.

Why a puppy from a Club E.L.S.A. breeder?

When we go to shows and other events we allways recognize, that a lot of people are confused and do not know much about Pedigrees and their meaningfulness. International accepted Pedigrees

Welpen von E.L.S.A. Züchtern erhalten VDH/FCI-Papiere. Nur diese Papiere sichern eine national und international anerkannte, kontrollierte Qualität der Züchter und Zuchthunde. Und nur diese Papiere ermöglichen auch Ihnen eine vom VDH anerkannte Zucht, wenn Sie eine solche anstreben.

Breeding examinations

Im Club E.L.S.A. zugelassene Zuchthunde haben im Alter von zwei bis drei Jahren eine Zuchtzulassungsprüfung abgelegt. Von einer unabhängigen Zucht- und Körkommission wurden sie in Bezug auf ein sicheres, souveränes Wesen und auf ein Exterieur gemäß dem international gültigen Rassestandard überprüft.

Healthy breeding dogs

E.L.S.A. Zuchthunde sind auf HD, ED und OCD geröntgt. Darüber hinaus führen weitere vererbbare Defekte – z.B. Dermoid Sinus, Knickrute, Kieferanomalien und Herzfehler – zum Zuchtausschluss. Jeder Welpe erhält zum Abgabezeitpunkt bereits ein Abnahmeprotokoll unseres Zuchtwartes und ist tierärztlich untersucht, geimpft, entwurmt und gechipt. E.L.S.A. Deckrüden dürfen nicht zu häufig eingesetzt werden.

No breeding in big quantity

E.L.S.A. Züchter dürfen höchstens zwei Zuchthündinnen, gleich welcher Rasse, besitzen und es darf nicht mehr als ein Wurf zeitgleich aufgezogen werden. Dies sichert unserer sensiblen Rasse während der wichtigen ersten Wochen die volle Aufmerksamkeit der Züchter. Zwischen großen Würfen muss zur Schonung der Hündin ein Zeitraum von mindestens 18 Monaten liegen. Zuchthündinnen dürfen im Normalfall nicht mehr als drei Würfe haben.

Positive socialization/influence

E.L.S.A. dogs an their progeny do not live in Kennels, they are with their family in the human neighbourhood and integrated in their life. The puppies are positively influenced early and socialised. They learn people, other animals and siblings and know how to deal with different enviroment attractions.
